I've heard that Apple will cover the screen replacement for this defect even when the computer is out of warranty, but I wouldn't want to bank on that so I'm glad we have it covered until 2020 with the extended warranty. It's a widely known problem that is apparently linked to the screens they sourced from LG at the time they were making this model. The ghosting / image retention on our current iMac is one of those things. Sometimes Apple really drops the ball though, either on quality control or in terms of manufacturing defects that don't surface until a line has already gone into mass production. We've also got an iPhone 5S that functions without issue, and have used the 6SPlus without issue as well. Then it continued running on an older version of iOS until we boxed it for storage for a couple years, and during that time the battery went bad, expanded, and busted up the board and screen in the process.

Apple makes some really solid products-to note, we had an iPhone 3GS (so first generation, but the model optimized for speed) that functioned flawlessly until it got to the point where we couldn't update the OS anymore. It's really coverage against hardware failure. Important to note, AppleCare will not cover you for dropping the machine or spilling liquids on it, etc.

That said, in both of my replacement cases it took some very persistent "I need to escalate this," to get to the level of support where I was assigned a specific person whose job it was to stay with me until there was a full resolution.Ĭlick to expand.It really depends. I've found Apple is actually very good about standing behind the coverage. Several years ago they also replaced an iPhone for me under the AppleCare plan. Finally, I asked for a replacement - I was actually past the 3-year mark at this point but since it was well documented before my AppleCare expired they ended up sending me a brand new model. They repaired it a few different times, but the problem kept reoccurring.

I had a Mac Air that after about 2 years started having intermittent problems with the power port (as in I would plug it in and sometimes it wouldn't charge ). I always buy AppleCare and have found it to be totally worth the cost (and peace of mind). I'm somebody who never buys extended warranties. I think you will spend less money in the long run. Just be prepared to pay a little out of pocket in the even that something silly happens.

I can't imagine how I could break my iMac or Macbook pro and as many times I've dropped my phones, the case has always protected them. IMO, it is a complete waste of money unless you're a clumsy person and drop you phone or you live with people who break stuff. I use them every day and have never bought Apple Care. Other than that, I've had no problems with any of my other Apple products. My iPhone 5 had a faulty battery but it was well documented as a design flaw, and the Apple store replaced the battery for me at no charge. I learned my lesson and bought a case for every subsequent phone. I took it to a local phone repair shop and they replaced the screen so that it was good as new for about 90 bucks. I dropped my first iPhone and didn't have a case at the time which shattered the screen. I have had every iPhone since the iPhone 2nd generation and currently use an iPhone 6 plus, iPhone 7 plus, iPhone X, iMac, Macbook Pro, and an Ipad. If that's not something you're interested in, there are other third-party insurance options like Squarespace or Protect My Bubble. Otherwise I'd get a rider on your home or renter's insurance to cover damage.
If phone tech support is a priority, I'd go AppleCare it extends the 30-day support warranty and Apple's tech helpers are first-rate. So this way I get a new laptop even if the cat jumps on the thing and sends it bouncing onto the kitchen floor, which has nearly happened more times than I care to think about. People have told me of hassles with AppleCare repairs and to my knowledge, AppleCare only covers things that are *their* fault.
I called the folks at USAA and got a special rider for my laptop and phone on my renter's policy, which I already had. I did not buy AppleCare because my laptop's covered by my renter's insurance. That said, I think I lucked out on this particular model. I have a 13-inch MacBook Pro from early 2015, it gets heavy use every day, and I never had one problem.
